Ankara or Istanbul for dental treatment in Türkiye?

Almost every dental tourism website points at Istanbul. Here is what that concentration costs you clinically, and what Ankara offers instead — including where Istanbul genuinely wins.

Published

Search for dental treatment in Türkiye and you will find Istanbul, then Antalya, then Istanbul again. That is not because the dentistry is better there. It is because those are the cities with the flights, the hotels and the tourism infrastructure, and dental tourism grew up alongside that infrastructure rather than alongside the dentistry.

Since we are in Ankara, we have an obvious interest here. So let us start with the part that argues against us.

Where Istanbul genuinely wins

Getting there. Istanbul has direct flights from almost everywhere in Europe, several a day, often cheap. Ankara has direct flights from a good number of European cities, but not all, and for some routes you will connect through Istanbul and add two hours. If you are making two trips for implants, that difference is real and you should count it.

Making a holiday of it. If you want your treatment wrapped in a few days of sightseeing or a beach, Istanbul and Antalya are simply better at that. We are not going to pretend Ankara is a holiday destination. It is a working capital city.

Choice. There are more clinics in Istanbul. If your first choice does not work out, the alternatives are next door.

If those three things dominate your decision, book Istanbul with our blessing — but read the verification questions below first, because the density that gives you choice also gives you the widest range of quality in the country.

What the concentration costs you

High-volume dental tourism districts run on throughput. That is not a slur; it is the business model, and it is what makes the prices possible. But throughput has clinical consequences worth knowing about before you agree to a plan.

The most common is discontinuity. In a clinic seeing large numbers of arrivals every week, the dentist who examines you on day one is frequently not the one who preps your teeth on day two or fits the final work on day five. Each handover is a place where an intention gets lost — the shade you agreed, the edge length you discussed, the tooth you said you wanted left alone.

The second is time. Chair time is the scarcest resource in a throughput clinic, and the way to protect margin at a fixed price is to spend less of it per patient. Most of what separates good ceramic work from mediocre ceramic work is time: time on the margins, time on the try-in, time adjusting the bite afterwards.

The third is the agency layer. The most tourism-dense areas have the highest concentration of intermediaries, and the commission is inside your quote whether or not anyone mentions it.

What Ankara offers instead

Dentistry built for locals. Ankara clinics are mostly built around a resident population that comes back — for a check-up, for a problem, for their family. When your patients live twenty minutes away and will tell their neighbours, the incentive around a rushed crown is completely different from a clinic whose patients fly home and are never seen again.

Academic depth. Ankara has the country’s oldest and largest dental faculties. That matters in an indirect but real way: it is where specialists train, where difficult cases get referred, and where the professional network that a clinician can call on when your case is not straightforward actually lives.

Less noise around the price. Ankara has never been a package-tourism destination, so its dentistry has not been reshaped into one. What you get is closer to a normal dental practice that also treats people who came by plane.

The city is easy. Compact centre, short journeys, a metro, and hotels that cost less than the equivalent in Istanbul. Getting from your hotel to an appointment is fifteen minutes, not an hour of traffic. Across a five-day treatment week, that is most of a day back.

The honest summary

If your treatment is straightforward, your priority is a short cheap flight, and you want to see Hagia Sophia afterwards, Istanbul is a reasonable choice — just verify the clinic properly.

If your case is complex, if continuity of clinician matters to you, if you want to deal directly with the people doing the work rather than through a coordinator, or if you simply want the treatment to be the point of the trip, Ankara is the better proposition and the extra connection is a fair price for it.

Ask these regardless of the city

Will the same dentist see me from first examination to final fit, and can I have their name? How many days will I be in the country, across how many trips? Which implant or ceramic system, by brand, and will I get the lot numbers in writing? Is a cone-beam CT scan included in the plan? Are you the treating clinic or an intermediary? What happens, and who pays, if something needs redoing after I fly home?

The city on the letterhead matters far less than the answers to those six questions.

We are in Çankaya, Ankara. If you want to know whether travelling here makes sense for your case, send us a photograph or an X-ray and we will tell you plainly — including when the answer is no.

How health tourism in Türkiye actually works

Türkiye licenses clinics that treat international patients. Most patients never hear about it, which is a shame, because it is the single most useful thing to check before you book.

Start with a written plan, not a phone call

Send a photo or a panoramic X-ray and receive a treatment plan, a schedule and a fixed quote within one working day. No cost, no obligation.
