No enamel removed
Composite is added to the tooth surface, so in most cases nothing is drilled, no anaesthetic is needed and the change is reversible.
Same-day, no drilling
Composite bonding reshapes a tooth by adding material rather than removing it. Chipped edges, small gaps, worn incisal edges and irregular shapes can often be corrected in a single appointment, without anaesthetic and without touching healthy enamel.
Almost every other aesthetic treatment starts by removing tooth structure. Bonding does the opposite: a tooth-coloured composite resin is applied to the existing surface, sculpted by hand, hardened with a curing light and polished. In most cases nothing is drilled and no anaesthetic is needed. If you dislike the result, it can be removed and the tooth is exactly as it was.
That reversibility makes bonding the sensible first step for a great many patients — particularly younger ones, where committing to ceramic in their twenties means committing to replacing it several times over a lifetime.
Chipped or fractured incisal edges. Small to moderate diastemas — the gap between the two front teeth. Teeth that are slightly too short after years of wear. Peg-shaped lateral incisors. Minor irregularities in shape or position. Localised white or brown spots, which can be masked after resin infiltration. Exposed root surfaces after gum recession, which bonding covers to reduce sensitivity.
Bonding is not the answer for a wholesale colour change across a full smile — whitening does that better and cheaper. It cannot correct significant crowding, which needs orthodontics. It is less suited to patients who grind heavily, because composite chips more readily than ceramic. And it stains over years in a way porcelain does not: coffee, red wine and tobacco all leave their mark, and heavy consumers should expect polishing every year or two.
Composite is applied freehand. Two clinicians using the same resin on the same tooth can produce results that look nothing alike — because the outcome depends on layering different opacities to reproduce the way light behaves in a natural tooth, on building the surface texture that stops a tooth looking flat, on shaping the contact point so floss passes cleanly, and on the polishing sequence that gives a lasting shine rather than a surface that dulls within months.
For multi-tooth cases we work through a silicone key made from a wax-up of the approved design, which transfers the planned shape into the mouth accurately instead of relying on freehand estimation across ten teeth.
Well-executed bonding typically lasts four to eight years before it needs repolishing or partial replacement. It is repairable — a chip can usually be added to without redoing the whole restoration — which is one of its practical advantages over ceramic. Avoid biting nails, pens and packaging; wear a night guard if you grind; and have the surfaces polished at your routine appointments.
Bonding is frequently the finishing step after whitening or orthodontics, closing the small residual spaces alignment leaves behind and evening out edges. It is also a legitimate long-term alternative to veneers for patients who want the aesthetic change without committing enamel to it. At the design stage we will tell you honestly which of the two your case suits.

Most bonding cases are completed the same day, which makes it the most travel-friendly aesthetic treatment we offer.
Different opacities are layered and surface texture built in, so the restoration transmits light rather than appearing flat and monochrome.
A chip can usually be added to rather than requiring the whole restoration to be replaced — a practical advantage over ceramic.
Shade is matched in daylight and, for multi-tooth cases, a wax-up and silicone key are prepared so the planned shape transfers accurately.
The enamel is cleaned and etched — no drilling in most cases — and a bonding agent applied under isolation.
Composite is placed in layers of differing opacity, sculpted by hand and light-cured to build shape and translucency.
Contours refined, contacts checked with floss, bite verified and a multi-stage polish applied for lasting gloss.
Neither is better in general; they solve different problems. Bonding adds material without removing enamel, costs less, is done in a day and is reversible, but it stains over years and lasts four to eight. Porcelain veneers resist staining, look better under close inspection and last ten to fifteen years, but they require some enamel removal and two appointments. For younger patients and smaller corrections, bonding is usually the wiser first step.
Typically four to eight years before repolishing or partial replacement is needed. Longevity depends heavily on habits: grinding, nail-biting and using teeth as tools shorten it, while a night guard and annual polishing extend it considerably.
Yes, more than porcelain does. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco gradually darken composite, especially at the margins. A professional polish every twelve to eighteen months restores most of the original brightness, and reducing staining drinks in the first 48 hours after placement helps the surface mature cleanly.
Small and moderate gaps, yes — usually in one visit and without drilling. Wide gaps are a different matter: closing them with composite alone can leave the two central teeth looking unnaturally broad. In those cases we either distribute the closure across several teeth or recommend orthodontics first.
Usually not. Because no healthy tooth structure is removed in most bonding cases, the procedure is painless. Anaesthetic is only needed where decay must be cleared first or where bonding extends below the gum line onto an exposed root.
